Book 1: The Mimic’s Road (The Swamp)

In 1883, Kiron is an innocent idealist sent to the Bengal Swamps. He encounters the Baak, a malevolent spirit that hunts via sound. It steals the voices of loved ones to lure men into the deep water. Kiron watches as his superior, Captain Finch, tries to bully the jungle with gunfire and shouting. The Baak mimics Finch, stripping him of his command and his voice. Kiron survives by learning silence from a local worker, but he commits his first sin: he lies in his official report to protect the Empire's reputation. This compromise creates the first crack in his soul.
